Een zak met rijst als onderpand

We hebben er lang naar uit gekeken, soms getwijfeld of de vertaling wel zou komen, maar vandaag ontvingen wij de Engelse vertaling van het Van Sminia-handschrift!

Mevrouw Lavanya, hoofd van het Telugu Language Program van het American Institute of Indian Studies, stuurde ons de tekst.

Het blijkt te gaan om een betalingsbewijs voor de levering van een partij rijst.
Bij deze transactie die plaatsvond op 6 augustus 1776 in de stad Palakollu in India waren veel personen betrokken.

Wij hebben nog vele vragen na het lezen van de vertaling. Wie waren de personen die in de brief genoemd zijn? Welk verband is er met de Van Sminia’s? Hoe is de brief in hun familiearchief terecht gekomen?

Wie heeft een idee, wie helpt ons verder?

With the mercy of Lord Sri Rama( Hindu God)

In the year named “Manmadha”(every year has a name according to Hinduism as of now), in the month of “Adhika Badrapadam”(every month has a name), on “Suddha Vidiya”(every day will be assigned a ‘thidhi’), on 6th August, 1776, this is the receipt given to Mr Sminior Denine, a town captain of a small township named “Thirbakamu”, that in the city of “Palakollu”, by us namely Mr Boddaru Adinarayudu and Mr Srimannarayudu along with Mr Raju Srinubai. In the transaction of a crop, Mr Babu kamalanabhudu thiruvenga in the need of Mr Sitaramudu took varahalu(currency of India by then)1001from us and also took varahalu 1001 from Mr Mamidi Venkayya having kept a bag of rice grains as a mortgage. He gave this total amount of varahalu 2002 to Mr Nagapatnam who in turn gave this amount to Mr Sitaramudu saying that there is no transaction between him and Mr Sitaramudu. Mr Sitaramudu came to “Palakollu” returned this amount of varahalu 2002 to us and we converted this amount to Mr Sminior Denine who in turn gave varahalu 1001 to Mr Mamidi Venkayya and we got back the bag of rice grains which was kept under mortgage. We sold this bag of rice grains to Mr Sminior Denine for varahalu 4068 and he in turn gave varahalu 146 to Mr Mamidi Venkayya in the name of tax and gave varahalu 254 to us. Hence, we confirm that we received the amount through this receipt. And, this document was written by me, the “karanam”(village head man) viz Mr kali kamaraju in the consent of Mr Boddaru Adinrayudu and Mr Srimannarayudu.
